Ela Ada Recipe | Ela Ada With Banana | Ela Appam | Steamed Banana Leaf Pancake with Video Recipe. Ela ada is a steamed banana leaf rice pancake. It is an indian sweet and a traditional kerala delicacy. 


It is a sweet dumpling. It’s outer layer is made with rice flour and its filled with a mixture of coconut, jaggery, and a hint of cardamom. It’s wrapped in banana leaf and steamed. 

The name “Ela Ada” comes from “Ela,” which means leaf in Malayalam (the language of Kerala), and “Ada,” which means the steamed parcel. It’s a popular snack or dessert in Kerala cuisine, loved for its unique flavor and aroma imparted by the banana leaves during the steaming process. 

Preparation of Ela Ada is same as that of kozhukattai, same ingredients are used for preparing both, and the only difference is in the flavor that comes from the wilted banana leaves used for steaming. 

Ela Ada is a traditional sweet made during festival. You can make this sweet with just 3 ingredients. Usually filling for ela ada is made with coconut and jaggery just for a variety in this recipe nendran banana also added. you can avoid it if you don’t have it. Ela Ada Ingredients

Nendran Banana-1

Ghee-1 tbs

Coconut-1 Cup

Powdered Jaggery-1 Cup

Cardamom Powder-1/4 tsp

Rice Flour-1 Cup

Ghee-1 tsp

Salt-1/2 tsp

Water-1 1/2 Cup

How To Make Ela Ada

  • Firstly, take one nendran banana. Peel off the skin and cut it into small pieces.
  • Heat 1tbs ghee in a pan, add the chopped banana pieces in it and saute it until the banana pieces are cooked well.
  • Further add coconut and powdered jaggery in it and let the jaggery dissolve completely.
  • Mash the banana pieces, then add cardamom powder in it and mix it. Filling is now ready.
  • Next roast the rice flour on low flame for 5 minutes.
  • Then transfer it into a bowl and allow it to cool down.
  • Further take 1 1/2 cup water in a pan, then add ghee and salt in it and mix it. Let it boil.
  • Once it started to boil, switch off the flame.
  • Then pour the hot water over the rice flour and mix it with a spoon.
  • Once it’s cooled down, knead the dough using your hand. Knead to a smooth non- sticky dough.
  • Next take a piece of banana leaf and grease the banana leaf with oil.
  • Then place a ball sized dough on banana leaf and flatten it with your fingers.
  • Further place a tbs of filling on one side of the flattened dough. Fold it from other side.
  • Then seal the sides by pressing it gently.
  • Finally place it inside a steamer and steam it for 15 minutes or until it’s fully cooked.
  • Ela Ada is now ready.
