Vishu Katta Recipe | Vishu Special Recipe | Kerala Authentic Recipe with Video Recipe. Vishu katta is a traditional dessert from the Indian state of Kerala, typically prepared during the festival of Vishu. This is one of the main breakfast items that people in kerala prepare on the day of Vishu. It is a steamed rice cake which is made with rice and coconut milk and flavored with cumin seeds. You can serve it with jaggery syrup.


It’s preparation is very simple and you need just raw rice, coconut milk and cumin seeds for preparing this Vishnu Katta. Here I have used unakkalari(Kerala red raw rice) for preparing this Vishnu katta. You can prepare this with raw rice also. Try this recipe and let me know your feedback.

Ingredients

Unakkalari(Kerala Red Raw Rice -1 cup

Thin Coconut Milk-4 Cup

Thick Coconut Milk-1 Cup

Cumin Powder-1/2 tsp

Jaggery-1 Cup

Water-1 Cup

How To Make Vishu Katta

  • Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes.
  • Then drain the water and keep it aside.
  • Further heat 4 cup thin coconut milk in a heavy bottomed pan and let it boil.
  • Once it’s started to boil add the drained rice in it.
  • Stir it continuously and cook it in low flame until the rice is 1/2 cooked.
  • Next add salt to taste in it and mix well.
  • Further cook it in low flame until the coconut milk is absorbed well into the rice & rice is 3/4 th cooked.
  • Then add cumin powder in it and mix well.
  • Next add thick coconut milk in it and cook it in low flame until the rice is cooked well  & coconut milk is absorbed well.
  • Further cook it in low flame until the mixture starts to leave from sides of the pan.
  • Once it started to leave from sides of the pan, then it will be the correct consistency of Vishnu katta mixture.
  • Finally, transfer the mixture into a plate and level it.
  • Allow it to cool down completely.
  • Now we need to prepare the jaggery syrup. For that, first we need to add 1 cup jaggery powder into a pan, then add 1 cup water into it. Heat it and let the jaggery dissolve completely.
  • Switch off the flame and strain it.
  • Once Vishnu katta cooled down completely, cut it into pieces.
  • Serve it with jaggery syrup.
