Kozhukattai, also known as modak or kadubu in different regions of India, is a traditional steamed dumpling or sweet delicacy that is popularly prepared during festivals, especially Ganesh Chaturthi. It’s made by creating a dough using rice flour, which is then shaped into small dumplings. The dough is made by mixing rice flour with boiling water. Today, I’ll share the recipe for ethapazham (ripe plantain) kozhukattai.

Ethapazham kozhukattai is a sweet dumpling made from ripe plantains (ethapazham) and rice flour. To make ethapazham kozhukattai, we start by making the dough. First, we mash the ripe plantain and then mix the mashed plantain with rice flour. Knead the dough until smooth, and then take small portions to form the dumplings. The dumplings are filled with a mixture of grated coconut, jaggery, ripe plantain pieces, and cardamom powder. After filling the dumplings, shape them into different forms, often resembling a modak or a half-moon shape, by carefully folding and pinching the edges. Steam the filled kozhukattai until fully cooked, resulting in a soft and tender texture.

Ethapazham kozhukattai is often served as an offering during religious ceremonies and is also enjoyed as a delightful snack or dessert by people of all ages.
