Unnakkaya Recipe | Banana Rolls Recipe

Today I am here to post one of my favorite snacks recipe that is Unnakkaya / Banana Rolls.This is a famous snack item in North kerala. Especially this snack will prepare during Ramadam iftar time in muslim’s house.It’s shape is like unnakaya(malayalam name of cotton pod).It is prepared by filling steamed plantain  with lightly sauted mixture of coconut,cashew nuts and raisins in ghee.As i am a big fan of this snack,I searched in internet for the unnakkaya recipe and oneday I prepared it in my house.I am sharing that recipe here.The recipe needs medium ripe plantain(Nenthrapazham).It should not be over ripe.I am sure that all will love this snack’s taste.You can prepare this as an evening snack for your kids.Kids and adults will love it.

Cooking Time:10 minute
Servings: 8 Banana Rolls

 Ingredients

Medium ripe plantain/Nenthrapazham-1
Grated Coconut-1/2 cup
Sugar-3 tbs
Cashew nuts-2 tbs
Raisins-2 tbs
Cardamon Powder-1 tsp
Ghee-2 tbs
Oil for frying

Method Of Preparation

  • Cut plantain into half and steam the banana until banana is well cooked and turns soft(Do not overcook the plantain)
  • Remove the outer skin and black seeds in the middle
  • Mash it well with your hand or wooden spoon into a very smooth dough without any lumps and keep it aside

  • Heat ghee in a pan and add cashewnuts,raisins in it and fry for a couple of minutes till everything turns golden 
  • Add grated coconut and saute for 5 minutes 
  • Add sugar and cardamon powder in it and saute well.

  • Remove from heat and keep aside to cool
  • Grease your palm with oil and take little banana mixture about a lemon size and flatten it on your palm and put a teaspoon of filling on the middle and roll the dough into the shape of unnakkaya as shown in the below picture

  • Now heat a kadai with oil and deep fry the unnakkaya until it turns brown.Fry both the sides
  • Drain excess oil with a tissue paper and serve them hot as a tea time snack

Note:

  • Use medium ripe plantain for this recipe If it is over ripe it will be difficult for you to prepare this recipe
  • Do not overcook the bananas,it will become watery and will become difficult to hold
