Paal Kappa Recipe | Tapioca Cooked in Coconut Milk with Video Recipe. a delicious Kerala dish made with tapioca. Tapioca is called “Kappa” and milk is called “Paal” in Malayalam. Paal Kappa means “Tapioca cooked in coconut milk”.
In most of the Kerala cuisine, tapiocas are served as the main course in addition to rice. They go well with hot curries like those of fish, meat or even just with a basic spicy chili chutney.
It is very easy to prepare with just few ingredients. firstly tapioca is cooked in water along with salt. Later slow cooked in thin coconut milk to get creamy texture. Once reached creamy texture, switch off the flame and add thick coconut milk. Finally, tempered with small onions, dry red chilies and curry leaves.

Paal Kappa Ingredients
Tapioca-500gm
Shallots-8 (chopped)
Ginger-Small piece
Green chili-2 nos
Thin coconut milk-2 cup
Thick coconut milk-1/2 cup
Coconut Oil-2 tbs
Mustard seeds-1 tsp
Dry Redchilies-2
Curry leaves
Salt
How To Make Paal Kappa
- Firstly, clean the tapioca and cut into small pieces.
- Then transfer it into a pressure cooker.
- Further add 1tsp salt and water as required.
- Pressure cook it on medium heat for 4 whistles or until tapioca is cooked well.
- Once the tapioca is cooked well, drain the water.
- Transfer the cooked tapioca into a kadai.
- Add shallots, ginger, green chilli and thin coconut milk into it and mix it well.
- Allow the coconut milk to boil until it thickens.
- Then add 1/2 tsp salt and mix it well.
- Further mash the tapioca well and switch off the flame.
- Finally add thick coconut milk and mix it well.
- Paal Kappa is now ready to serve.
