Normally we will discard the outer layer of the nutmeg fruit and we will use the inner seed commonly known as nutmeg but the outer layer which is in yellow color is also edible and this pickle is made by that outer layer. This pickle is good for digestion and stomach ailments. In the video posted at the end of this page, u can see how we can take the outer layer of nutmeg for preparing this pickle. Ingredients

Nutmeg Fruit/Jathikka-10
Ginger chopped-1 tbs
Garlic chopped-1 tbs
Redchilli powder-2 tbs
Turmeric powder-1/4tsp
Fenugreek powder-1/4tsp
Asafoetida powder-1/2tsp
Curry leaves-few
Vinegar-2 tbs
Salt-1tsp


Method Of Preparation

  • Wash the nutmeg fruit under running water and wipe the water with a kitchen towel
  • Peel the skin of nutmeg fruit
  • Remove the seed and the mace covering
  • Chop the fruit in small cube size pieces
  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds
  • Add Ginger and garlic pieces into it
  • Add the chopped nutmeg fruit into it and sauté it for few minutes
  • Add redchilli powder into it and mix well
  • Add fenugreek powder, turmeric powder and asafoetida powder into it and mix everything well
  • Add 1/2 cup water into it, and then add salt into it
  • Mix everything well and let it cook until nutmeg is cooked well and masala is well coated in jathikka
  • Add few curry leaves into it
  • Sauté it well until the mixture thickens
  • Once the mixture thickened switch off the flame and add vinegar into it
  • Mix it well and allow it to cool down completely then store in an airtight container
