Kottayam style fish curry

Today’s recipe is for fish lovers. Today I would like to share with you the recipe of a spicy and delicious Kottayam style fish curry. I used to make malabar style fish curry which is a coconut based curry, but this time I thought to make a curry which is not a coconut based, but it should taste delicious. My search for that type of curry ended up in this spicy delicious Kottayam style fish curry. This curry is a tamarind based curry, because the main flavor for this curry comes from a sour ingredient called as kokum/kudampuli. This time I tried to make fish curry in clay pot/ manchatti. Curries made in clay pot/ manchatti tastes good, so try this curry in claypot, if you have it, for getting the actual taste of this curry. Here I used coconut oil for making this curry. U won’t get the actual taste of this curry, if you used any other oils. so try to use coconut oil for making this curry. This curry tastes delicious when we had it on next day. It goes well with rice/ kappa puzhukku. So, fish lovers, just try this recipe, I am sure that you will love the taste of this curry. Let us come to the recipe.

Ingredients

Fish-1/2 kg ( Here I am using red snapper)
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds-1 tsp
Green chillies-2, chopped
Ginger-Small piece, chopped
Garlic cloves-3, chopped
Small onions-10, chopped
Turmeric powder-1 tsp
Kashmiri redchilli powder-2 1/2 tbs
Salt-2 tsp
Kokum/Kudam puli-2 big pieces
Curry leaves-2 spring
Coconut oil-2 tbs


Method Of Preparation

  • Clean fish well and cut into medium size pieces
  • Heat a clay pot with coconut oil
  • Once it is hot, add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds into it
  • Sauté until it splutters
  • Then add green chilies, ginger and garlic into it
  • Sauté it for 2 minutes over low flame
  • Then add chopped small onions into it
  • Sauté until onion becomes transparent
  • Then keep the flame to low, and add turmeric powder, Kashmiri chili powder into it
  • Sauté until raw smell of powders goes and oil starts to separate
  • Then add salt into it and mix well
  • Then add kokum/kudam puli along with soaked water
  • Mix everything well and then add 1 1/2 cup water into it, mix well, cover it and allow it to boil
  • Once it started to boil add fish pieces into it, then mix gently with a spoon
  • Once it started to boil don’t use spoon to mix, just swirl the pot to mix every thing well
  • Cook until the fish pieces are cooked well
  • Once the fish pieces are cooked well finally add few curry leaves and 1 tsp coconut oil on top and switch off the flame
  • Cover it with a lid and let it stay aside for 1 hour. serve it after 1 hour for best result
  • After 1 hour, kerala style fish curry will be ready to serve
