Elephant Foot Yam Fry Recipe | Chena Fry Recipe with Video Recipe. Today’s recipe is an easy to prepare vegetarian side dish made with Elephant foot yam/Chena/Suran. In my previous post of Elephant Foot Yam Kheer Recipe | Chena Payasam Recipe, I have mentioned the health benefits of including elephant foot yam in your diet. This is a recipe of a side dish that you can prepare within few minutes with very few ingredients that are always available in your kitchen. It will tastes delicious and it will go well as a side dish with rice. Only problem is that you may feel itching in your hands after peeling and slicing yam. To avoid this, apply some oil on your hands and then peel and slice yam. Sometimes after eating it, you may feel itching on throat n tongue. To avoid that add some sour agent like tamarind, curd or lemon juice while cooking it. In this recipe I added lemon juice while cooking the yam and curd while marinating.
I used to prepare yam dishes with store-bought yam piece only, but this time when I visited one of my cousins house, I got an organic elephant foot yam, that grown in their home garden. When I got that elephant foot yam, I thought to prepare some variety dishes with that yam. First I tried Elephant Foot Yam Kheer Recipe | Chena Payasam Recipe. Ingredients


Elephant Yam/ Chena-250 gm
Turmeric Powder-1/2 tsp for cooking+ 1/2 tsp for marinating
Salt-1/2 tsp
Lemon Juice-1/2 of a Lemon
Redchilli Powder-1 tsp
Coriander Powder-1 tsp
Garam masala-1/2 tsp
Pepper Powder-1/2 tsp
Rice flour-1 tbs
Salt-1/2 tsp
Curd-1 tbs
Oil for frying

Method Of Preparation

  • Apply some oil on your hand for avoiding itching. Remove the outer skin of the yam with a knife
  • Wash it well with water. Cut Yam into 1/4 inch thick slices
  • Transfer it into a pressure cooker. Add turmeric powder, salt, lemon juice and 1/2 cup water into it and mix well. Pressure cook it for 3 to 4 whistle or until yam pieces are 90% cooked
  • Drain the water. Add turmeric powder, redchilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala, pepper powder, rice flour, salt, curd and little water into it and mix well. Make sure that the yam pieces are well coated with the masala mix. Keep it aside for 5 minute
  • Heat oil in a pan. Fry it in low-medium flame until it turns crispy and golden brown in color
  • Yam Fry/Chena Fry is now ready to serve hot
