Pappadam is a thin,crisp disc-shaped Indian food typically based on a seasoned dough made from black gram(urad flour),fried or cooked with dry heat. Flours made from other sources such as lentils , chick peas, rice, tapioca or potato,can be used. This food is also known as Pappad in North India, Appadam in Telugu, Appalam in Tamil, Happala in Kannada and Pappadam in Kerala.It is served as an accompaniment to a meal or eaten as a snack. Usually its deep fried in oil or popped in microwave oven but for a variety I stir fried the deep fried pappad in oil with grated coconut. It tastes good and you can serve it as as a side dish with rice. Let us see how to make it. Try this recipe and let me know your comments



Ingredients

Pappadam-10
Grated Coconut-1/2 cup
Turmeric powder-1/4tsp
Green chilies-4
Small Onions-6.finely chopped
Oil-1/2 cup for frying + 3tbs for stir frying with coconut mixture
Dried Red chilies-3
Curry leaves-few
Salt to taste

Method Of Preparation

  • Fry the Pappadams in oil and then crush them
  • Grind the grated coconut with green chilies and turmeric powder
  • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and when it starts to splutter add dry red chilies,small onions and curry leaves in it and saute for a minute
  • Then add the grounded coconut mixture and crushed pappadam in it and mix well
  • Lower the flame and cook it for 5 minutes and remove from fire
  • Serve it as a side dish with rice
